Acer to Replace Rival Lenovo As Olympic Sponsor in 2009

Acer Inc., the world's third-largest personal-computer maker by unit shipments, said it will succeed Chinese rival Lenovo Group Ltd. as the Olympic Games' computing-equipment sponsor starting in 2009.

The sponsorship could help Acer in its efforts to gain ground on Dell Inc., the world's second-largest PC brand. "This cooperation with the International Olympic Committee will raise Acer's brand awareness world-wide," Acer Chairman J.T. Wang told reporters here. "We have very strong sales in Europe....The London Olympic Games will further improve our status there."

Acer will supply notebook and desktop computers and monitors to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2012 London Summer Games, Acer said in a statement, without disclosing financial terms of the sponsorship.

The Taiwanese company also said its revenue will likely increase by double-digit percentages annually beginning in 2008.

Acer's sponsorship was announced a day after Lenovo, China's only global Olympics sponsor, said it will give up that role after next year's Games in Beijing. Lenovo's Olympic sponsorships have helped the company build a global brand, Lenovo said in a statement on its Web site.

Acer's sponsorship will help the company take a more prominent place on the global stage. The company advanced its cause significantly with its recent acquisition of Gateway Inc., of Irvine, California, just as Lenovo did two years earlier when it bought the PC operations of International Business Machines Corp. The Gateway purchase substantially expanded Acer's foothold in the U.S., a market long dominated by Dell and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Acer ranked fourth in the world in global PC shipments in the third quarter of this year, according to research firm IDC, but the completion of the Gateway acquisition in October moved it into the No. 3 spot.

The union of Acer and Gateway underscored how important size is in the consolidating PC industry, where margins are thin and competition is increasing. The rise of companies like Acer and Lenovo reflects the growing importance of Asian companies in the global PC marketplace.

Analysts generally viewed the new sponsorship positively. "There will be world-wide advertising for Acer, and this is positive for Acer in terms of brand recognition," said Sean Ryan, at Fubon Securities Investment Trust.

Acer shares rose 1.2% to 67.40 New Taiwan dollars (US$2.09) in Taipei before the announcement. The market's benchmark index ended 0.2% higher.

Acer's revenue is expected to exceed US$20 billion in 2008 and may increase to between US$30 billion and US$40 billion by 2012, Mr. Wang, the chairman, told reporters. It totaled US$8.07 billion in the January-October period.

"With the large revenue we have, we can easily afford such sponsorship," Mr. Wang said.

Acer will be a global sponsor of the Olympic Games along with Coca-Cola Co., McDonald's Corp. and Visa International, among others, according to the Acer statement.
