DirectX 10 is 2007

Nvidia G80 Vista drivers don't materialise in 2006

Nvidia and everyone else targeted DirectX10 for next year but we and dozens of G80 users are frustrated as we don’t even have buggy drivers for the new OS yet. We at least expected some beta in 2006 but this driver has been more than delayed.
Nvidia is playing stall until it's ready tactics but is getting a lot of criticis about it. People had time over the Yule break and all G80 owners can forget about Aero glass for Yule and New Year.

So what happens when you plug a G80 into a Vista system? You are forced to install standard VGA driver that will let you change the resolution to fit your native resolution of the screen and that’s it. Aero Glass won’t work and even rendering of 2D windows will be difficult.

Nvidia has really disappointed us with lack of Vista driver in 2006 but we hope that the full working version will be ready soon. Until then, ATI users can play all they want with Vista with the exception that a few things won’t work well, but every card is supported while Nvidia users can forget the super high end G80s for the time being.

Data hybrid: Fujitsu's GPS-RFID Device

Data hybrid: Fujitsu's GPS-RFID device Fujitsu has unveiled a GPS receiver with a built-in RFID tag. You could also look at that the other way round. Either way, you have a device that can both track and send.

It has the rather uninspiring yet practical name of Tag Locator, which sort of masks its GPS abilities. This is first and foremost a longitude-latitude device, which can deliver accuracy within 3 to 5 meters. That kind of accuracy will be welcome indeed to those who find wide-range locators frustrating.

The RFID tag spills out its signal in a wide beam of data, bathing readers within 200 meters in all directions with its exact location. As long as the frequency is 429MHz, you're good to go. The price: US$169. [Source]

The Hottest Gifts

Media players, accessories among hottest gifts

Portable media players and related accessories are among the hottest gift items this holiday season. People can now carry thousands of songs in their pocket, and many of the sleek gizmos can display photos and videos as well.

It's an alluring new kind of lifestyle: entertainment on-the-go. A soundtrack for your life.

A sampling of what's available:

Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod.
Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod The most popular line of portable players, commanding 75 percent of the U.S. market, is known for its sleek design, ease of use and integration with Apple's iTunes software and online store.

The iPod Shuffle is the smallest in the lineup -- tinier than a matchbook.

The Shuffle lacks a display, playing songs in random order or according to a playlist. The iPod Nano, which has a 1.5-inch display, is the midsize model but still super-slim, using up to 8 gigabytes of flash memory to store 8,000 tunes or 25,000 photos.

The full-size iPod has a beefier 30- or 80-gigabyte hard drive and can play back video on a bright 3.5-inch screen. (Manufacturer's suggested retail price: 1GB Shuffle $79; Nano, from $149 for 2GB to $250 for 8GB; video-capable iPod $250 for 30GB, $350 for 80GB)

SanDisk Sansa e200R Rhapsody series.
An MP3 player with an easy, integrated way to access millions of songs through the Rhapsody subscription music service.

Sansa players are the second-most popular in the U.S. market with a 10 percent share, according to The NPD Group, a research company. Unlike iPods, the e200R players also offer an FM tuner/recorder, voice recording and a memory card slot for additional storage.

The 1.8-inch color screen displays photos and video, though video playback is not a main feature.

Comes preloaded with music from Rhapsody. (MSRP: Four models from $140 for 2GB to $250 for 8GB. Separate music subscription needed)

Creative Zen Vision W.
Creative Zen Vision W A portable video player with a generous, bright 4.3-inch wide-screen display.

It supports MP3 and WMA audio files and a variety of video standards, including Windows-based formats used by movie download services like Amazon.com's Unbox.

Compatible with TiVoToGo so TiVo users can transfer recorded television programs onto the device.

A CompactFlash slot can be used to play back photos or videos from digital cameras. ($300 for 30GB, $400 for 60GB)

Archos 604 Wi-Fi.
Archos 604 WiFiPlay music and videos that are streamed from your PC or stored on this 30-gigabyte multimedia player with built-in Wi-Fi wireless networking.

It features a vibrant 4.3-inch touch screen and supports a variety of video formats, including copy-protected files from movie download services that use Microsoft's digital rights management technology.

It also can be used to surf the Web. It records TV shows when docked to an optional digital video recording station.

The device turns into a hard drive-based camcorder when it's connected to a digital camera and an optional adapter -- or a separately sold helmet mini-cam. (MSRP: $450)

Myvu Personal Media Viewer
Myvu Personal Media Viewer Watch videos or downloaded TV programs while you're washing dishes with this personal media viewer that's worn like a pair of space-age style sunglasses.

It hooks up to a portable media player so it seems like you're watching video on a 27-inch screen instead of a 2.5-inch one.

There's a universal version that weighs 2.4 ounces and works with any media player or a lighter, made-for-iPod version. (MSRP: $269 for universal model, $300 for iPod model)

iRiver Clix The Clix
iRiver Clix Is a compact, rectangular media player with a 2.2-inch color display that can handle songs, photos and video.

It features an FM tuner/recorder and voice recording, and also works with Windows-based music services, including immediate, integrated compatibility with MTV Network's Urge download/subscription music service.

The device also can play downloaded casual games. It comes preloaded with games and songs from eMusic. (MSRP: $170 for 2GB model, $200 for 4GB)

Pioneer Inno The Inno is a portable XM satellite radio that also plays MP3 and Windows Media song files stored on its 1-gigabyte of internal memory.

It not only can directly record your favorite XM radio channels but also features a built-in FM transmitter and integration with the Napster music service.

If you hear a tune you like on XM, you could tag it for purchase later on Napster. (MSRP: $300. Napster subscription sold separately)

Marware's Sportsuit Sensor (plus) with the
Nike/ iPod Sport Kit

Marware's Sportsuit Sensor (plus) with the Nike/ i This combination creates a pedometer system that could be your virtual running coach while pumping out your exercise tunes.

The Nike/iPod kit has a receiver that connects to an iPod Nano and wirelessly communicates with a sensor that slides into a pocket under the insole of specially designed Nike shoes.

It tracks speed, time, distance and calories burned -- data which can be uploaded later to your workout log on NikePlus.com.

The velcro pouch from Marware means you could attach the sensor to the straps of any running shoe and not just special Nike treads. (MSRP: $10 for the Marware pouch, $29 for the Nike/iPod Sport Kit)

Bose QuietComfort 3 headphones. Listening to tunes on a digital music player while riding in subways, airplanes or cars could be less of an audio challenge with this noise-canceling headphone set.

It's worn over the ear and uses electronic wizardry to dampen noise from the outside world.

This latest model is smaller than its QC2 predecessor. Instead of large cups that envelop the ears, it has pads that rest on them. (MSRP: $349)

I177 iLuv Stereo Docking System Forgo
I177 iLuv Stereo Docking System The chatter of morning DJs with this iPod-compatible clock radio.

If folks are already toting their own music everywhere with iPods, why not also the bedroom where you can fall asleep or wake to your favorite tunes?

This iPod-compatible clock radio -- with a traditional design and alarm clock features -- will also simultaneously recharge the iPod. (MSRP: $90)

Boeing's Laptop Stolen

The theft, which was confirmed Tuesday, was the third such incident at Boeing in just over a year.

Files on the computer also contained home addresses, phone numbers and birth dates. Some of the files listed salary information.

"It's very disturbing to us when things like this happen, and there are certain steps you can take right away ... but we realize we need to go above and beyond those," said Tim Neale, a spokesman for Chicago-based Boeing.

The laptop was stolen earlier this month when an employee left it unattended, Neale said. He would not reveal where the theft happened, but said no proprietary, customer or supplier data were on the computer.

The computer was turned off when it was stolen and a password is needed to log onto the desktop, Neale said Wednesday.

Boeing began contacting current and former employees Tuesday night, and it will provide credit-monitoring services for three years for those affected, Neale said.

There is no evidence that any of the previous thefts have resulted in wrongdoing, he said.

A Boeing laptop containing information on roughly 160,000 current and former employees was stolen in November 2005. Then, in April, a laptop containing information on 3,600 employees and retirees was stolen.

Neale would not say whether any disciplinary action has been taken against the employee involved in the recent theft. However, he acknowledged that in each of the incidents company policy was violated.

"It's frustrating because obviously you don't want to see this happen," he said. [Yahoo News]

Motherboards And VGA Cards Makers Problems

Non-Vista-supporting motherboards and VGA card inventories now a headache

With Windows Vista up and coming, makers of motherboards and VGA cards are now worried they will incur losses from their inventory of low-end products that do support Microsoft's new operating system (OS), according to industry sources.

The makers are now raising the proportion of shipments to emerging markets and government purchases, worrying that if they are unable to clear their inventories of such low-end non-Vista-supporting motherboards and graphics cards, prices of such products will plummet after the new OS hits the market, the sources said.

The sources pointed out that non-Vista-supporting products, such as the ATI Radeon 9250 and Nvidia MX4000 have seen their prices fall to US$35 and below US$30, respectively.

Sources in Taiwan's PC sector said the proportion of products that do not support Vista is currently very low in the market, as Nvidia and AMD-ATI have already reduced the output for such products.

They pointed out that almost all PC products in the market now support at least Vista Basic, with little demand for low-end products that do not support Vista at all.

The sources predict that even products that only support Vista basic may quickly fall out of favor in the market as consumers are likely to be more eager to experience the full multimedia functions promised by Vista.

Meanwhile, sources with motherboard makers revealed that AMD-based motherboards with Nvidia GeForce 6100 and nForce 400 are currently among the market favorites. Many makers of such motherboards have received Vista-certification, the sources added.

Motherboard makers are also gearing up their development of Intel 945GC-based products, which have very good market potential, the sources said. Currently, Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) has launched its 945GC-based motherboard, the 945GCT-M3. [Digi Times]

Fujitsu Introduces World's First 300 GB 2.5" SATA Hard Disk Drive

Fujitsu 300 GB 2.5 SATA Hard Disk Drive
Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of the world's first 2.5" hard disk drive that offers storage capacity of 300 gigabytes (GB) with a Serial ATA(1) interface. The new hard disk drive "MHX2300BT" will be available in late February 2007. Featuring the highest storage capacity in the 2.5" class, it will be available on a global basis for use primarily in multifunctional mobile PCs and digital TVs.

Fujitsu began selling hard disk drives with perpendicular magnetic recording in October of this year. It has been an industrial leader in introducing high-capacity 2.5" hard disk drives, launching products with 160 GB in September 2005 and 200 GB in May 2006 that garnered high praise from many customers.

MHX2300BT marks the commercial introduction of second generation of perpendicular magnetic recording technology. The new hard disk drive will be offered in 300 GB, the highest storage capacity available in 2.5" hard disk drives, and 250 GB versions, offering the capacity needed to store terrestrial broadcasting digital TV videos. This level of capacity makes these hard disk drives suitable alternatives to the 3.5"drives typically found in desktop PCs, and their small size makes them especially well-suited to flat-panel TVs with built-in recorders.

The new hard disk drives are the RoHS compliant(2) and have read/write power consumption requirements of just 1.6 W, among the lowest in the world, making them environmentally-friendly products. They are also exceptionally quiet, emitting just 2.1 bels(3) of noise at idle.

Notes
1 Serial ATA: Also known as "SATA," this is a serialized version of the popular ATA interface used to connect storage hardware to computers. There is a 1:1 signal-line connection between the host and each attached drive, transmitting one bit at a time. This permits high speed with good tolerance for noise and interference. The standard also permits future increases in speed and transfer rate.
2 RoHS compliant: "Restriction on the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electric equipment." An EU directive published February 13, 2003. Member countries must enact legal restrictions regarding the use of hazardous materials in electrical and electronic equipment, to lessen risks to health and the environment. As a consequence, beginning July 1, 2006, electronics products destined for the EU are subject to regulations on the presence of lead, hexavalent chromium, mercury, cadmium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethyl (PBDE)
3 Bel: A unit for indicating noise levels. 1 bel is equivalent to 10 decibels.

Sony PS3 100% On Track For a March Release In Europe

Sony Playstation 3 Officials from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) have moved to quash rumors spreading across the Internet that the launch of the PlayStation 3 in Europe is to be delayed beyond March 2007.

Rumors apparently stemming from UK consumer website CVG, citing unnamed sources close to the company, had suggested that the launch could be delayed until April or even to as far back as September.

In fact, speculation on the launch, which has never been given a specific release date, has been rife since comments from Sony’s Phil Harrison appeared to put a March launch in question.

When asked if the PlayStation 3 would definitely be out in March, he answered, “Given that all of our previous statements about launching in Europe simultaneously with the US and Japan turned out not to be the case, I would not like to make any definitive statements on that.”

CVG, though, quotes a SCEE spokesperson as saying that “We’re 100 percent on track for a March release.” This statement is unlikely to quell the rampant speculation though, especially following the revelation that the North American launch received significantly less stock than was expected, which would undoubtedly make any subsequent launch in Europe more difficult. Fox sites top Yahoo as most-visited

According to comScore Media Metrix data, News Corp.'s Fox Interactive unit said the total of its pages viewed by the U.S. Web audience jumped to 39.5 million in November from 38.7 million in October.

Meanwhile, Yahoo's total pages viewed fell to 38.1 million in November from 41.6 million in October. Microsoft ranked third, falling to 17.9 million in November from 19.3 million.

Yahoo countered that it still had a larger audience, even though Fox sites won the top ranking for number of Web pages viewed. The company also has far more ads, and its customers spend more time, on average, on Yahoo than MySpace, it said.

Yahoo argued that it had lost the top spot in terms of page views because it increasingly uses the latest "Web 2.0" technology that did not need to spawn as many new pages to display Web information, such technology is more effective for readers a spokeswoman said.

Yahoo's audience measured 129.9 million unique visitors, compared with 57.2 million for MySpace.

Yahoo visitors also spent an average of 5.5 hours on the site in November, compared with 4 hours on MySpace, Yahoo quoted the comScore data as showing.

Citing data from ComScore Media Metrix, a division of comScore Networks, Fox Interactive said its ascent was driven by 200 percent year-over-year growth in page views for its popular social networking site, MySpace.

New video game console releases from Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news). and Nintendo Co. Ltd. also spurred visits to Fox's video gaming site, IGN.com.

Nintendo Wii: The Must-Have Console

Nintendo Wii Pictures
With the video-game market becoming dangerously vertical, Nintendo has introduced its new Wii console as an answer to gamers looking for a more satisfying experience -- and as a must-have on every gadget lover's Christmas list.

The learning curve to play and enjoy most next-generation video games has steepened, forcing potential consumers out of the market.

While other video-game makers are presenting increasingly realistic graphics with more gore and violence, Nintendo instead has focused on bringing the experience to everyone.

Enter the Wii.

Ahead of the Pack
After its Nov. 19 debut in North America for $249.99, game players flooded stores searching for the console.

If you weren't able to snatch one, don't worry -- Nintendo should have ample units available by year-end.

By comparison, Sony (SNE - commentary - Cramer's Take) officials previously warned that only 2 million PlayStation 3 consoles, which launched just days before the Wii, would ship by the end of this year -- half of what Sony had previously forecast.

In addition, the PlayStation 3's European launch was delayed until next March.

The Wii's pricing also comes as no surprise, as the company maintained for months that the console would be priced below its rivals.

Microsoft (MSFT - commentary - Cramer's Take) is charging $300-$400 for its two Xbox 360 models, based on hard-drive space and extras, while a PS3 will run $500-$600.

The real genius behind the Wii, though, is the way it plays.

This is where Nintendo has been the most innovative in the video-game wars: The new console comes packaged with the Wii Remote control (or Wii-mote) and Nunchuk attachment.

The Wii-mote resembles a television remote control, simplistic in design when compared to the complex controllers of the PS3 or the Xbox. The intuitive controls make it easy for anyone to pick it up and play games immediately.

The Nunchuk addition gives users a small joystick and enables dual-handed controls. [Source]

Hot Rumour: Apple Will Entering The Gaming Console

The latest Apple rumor has the computer maker entering the gaming console, taking on Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.

In a note to clients published Monday, Prudential Equity Analyst Jesse Tortora said his checks show the Cupertino, California computer maker is hiring video game designers. Mr. Tortora wrote that the hires could indicate a move into either the gaming console market or that Apple could add fresh gaming capabilities to its existing line of iPod music players.

If Apple attacks the gaming console market, it would put the company up against some various serious competition. However, such a move might be needed to keep Sony and Microsoft from dominating the digital living rooms.

Both Sony and Microsoft are relying on their consoles to push new technologies into the living room, posing a serious threat to Apple’s own digital lifestyle aspirations. Apple has been edging into the living room—building the ability to download feature films into its popular iTunes digital media store and announcing plans to introduce a set top box, code named iTV, that will allow users to more easily move downloaded films to their televisions.

However, those plans could be hampered by the game consoles being marketed by Microsoft and Sony. Microsoft has already introduced a movie download service tied to its Xbox Live service, and Sony’s plans to compete with Microsoft’s Xbox Live service with the Playstation 3 could soon push the electronics and media conglomerate in the same direction.

Apple has dabbled in the console market before. The Pippin, a set top multimedia player and game console designed by Apple and licensed by Bandai was a flop in the early 1990s. In May of 2006 it was named by PC World as one of the 25 worst tech products of all time.

There are two possibilities for Apple. A handheld device would allow Apple to easily build on the success of its iPod music players, which already play a wide array of games. A game console, however, could build on Apple’s efforts its MacMini computer and its plans for the iTV set top box.

Nevertheless, gaming would pose big risks for Apple. Microsoft spent billions subsidizing sales of its Xbox console in its efforts to take on Sony.[Source]

Blu-ray Disc Technology From Dell

Dell today introduced Blu-ray Disc technology into its product line, offering the next-generation optical disc format as an option on the extreme-performance XPS(TM) M1710 consumer notebook computer.

This enhancement furthers Dell's strategy to offer customers PCs that can function as a single platform for a compelling digital entertainment throughout the home.

Blu-ray Disc technology offers significant advancements for customers requiring high-definition content and storage for archiving large amounts of data and digital content. For instance, a Blu-ray Disc supports playback of high-definition feature-length films and offers the highest optical disc capacity - up to 50GB, - or more than five times the capacity of a dual-layer DVD.

Configured with Blu-ray technology, the XPS M1710 supports read/write capabilities across CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc media. Using Blu-ray Disc technology, M1710 users can burn up to 50GB of data or author up to 50GB of theater-quality video on a single piece of media.

"Blu-ray optical drive technology has gained broad industry support and we believe it will become the optical drive standard of the future," said Alex Gruzen, senior vice president, Dell Product Group. The SWISSMEMORY USB Victorinox

The SWISSMEMORY USB Victorinox
After you've picked out that giant high-definition TV or cool digital camera, it's time to concentrate on stocking stuffers. Consider a genuine Victorinox Swiss Army knife -- with a high-tech twist.

In addition to the usual knife, scissor, small screwdriver and nail file, the SwissMemory USB Drive Knife has a retractable pen, a small light and a USB ``thumb drive.''

There's nothing unique about a pocket-size thumb drive for storing computer data, but having one attached to your pocket knife means you always have it with you, at least while you're on the ground. I never go anywhere -- except on an airplane -- without mine.
