Toshiba Libretto W100 Dual-Touchscreen Display

Toshiba Libretto W100 Dual-Touchscreen Display

Toshiba's announcing the Libretto W100. It's a full Windows dual-screen "ultra-mobile PC" that's not quite a tablet and not quite a netbook.

The Libretto has the specs of a halfway decent ultraportable: a 1.2 GHz Pentium U5400 processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 62GB SSD, a USB port and a microSD slot.

Toshiba has also included a few apps to aid with personalization, content previews, and file searching. They include:

Toshiba Bulletin Board
Gives users greater personalization of their desktops with fast access to daily activities, tasks and projects, plus the ability to drag and drop photos, videos, links, documents and application shortcuts into one place.

Toshiba ReelTime
Helps users easily find files based on when they were opened with a simple visual history. With the flick of a finger, quickly scroll through automatically generated previews of documents, photos, videos and more, filter by file type or use the calendar to go back weeks or months.

File Browser
Makes it easier to access file folders and applications.

The libretto W100 will be available in very limited quantities “later this summer”.

W100 weighs just 699 grams and is powered by 1.2GHz U5400 CULV processor, 62GB SSD, 2GB RAM, WiMAX, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 1.02 megapixel camera and Windows 7 Home Premium OS. It will retail for around 120,000 yen.

Toshiba also introduced dynabook AZ netbook running Android 2.1 OS powered by Nvidia Tegra 250 SoC clocked at 1GHz. Its specs sheet include 10.1-inch WSVGA screen, 16GB Flash memory, 512MB RAM, 1.3MP webcam, Bluetooth and HDMI-out.

Toshiba Qosmio G45-AV690

Toshiba Qosmio G45-AV690

Toshiba's Qosmio line is known for high-end home-theater features (and high prices), and the massive Qosmio G45 is one of our favorite desktop replacements for movie and media consumption.

Toshiba rounds out the laptop's multimedia functions with the inclusion of an external CableCard TV tuner and a Media Center remote control. The external tuner lets you watch and record high-definition TV signals, but it's a cumbersome system and requires a CableCard from your cable TV provider and a visit from a cable company technician for installation. Our colleagues have had varying experiences with CableCard TV tuners--Rich Brown had a lot of trouble, while Matt Elliott's installation went smoothly--but in any event, this is not a feature you'll be able to use out of the box.

Even though the HD DVD drive is an albatross, at least the screen is up to the task of playing back hi-definition movies. The 17-inch LCD display offers a 1,920x1,200 native resolution, which is enough to display the full 1080p resolution of HD DVD discs.

The Toshiba Qosmio G45-AV690 is physically identical to its predecessor, sticking with the current Qosmio two-tone look, with a black lid offset against a white interior. The glossy plastic finish is attractive, even if we generally prefer the matte look, but it can be fingerprint-prone. A huge silver Qosmio logo sits on the back of the lid, broadcasting your brand preference to anyone nearby.

Toshiba includes an industry-standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty with the system, which includes onsite service. Upgrading to a three-year plan will cost an extra $134. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line, an online knowledge base and driver downloads.

Toshiba Plans HD DVD-R Laptop For Vista Launch

Toshiba will put on sale in Japan in late February the first laptop PC in the world with support for the write-once HD DVD-R optical disc format.

The G30/97A will be an upgrade of existing models of Toshiba's hefty Qosmio G30 entertainment laptop. Some of those models already contain an HD DVD reader and are on sale in major markets worldwide.

The computer is based on an Intel 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor and has a 17-inch widescreen display with 1,920 pixel by 1,280 pixel resolution, which means it can show high-definition images from HD DVD movie discs. The 4.8-kg machine also features a 320G-byte hard-disk drive, digital TV tuner and HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) output.

Toshiba hasn't announced a price for the computer, which will run the Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. International launch plans have also not been announced.

To coincide with Toshiba's launch of the Qosmio computer, Hitachi Maxell will begin selling HD DVD-R media. A single-side 15G byte disc will be available from Jan. 25 for around $16.
